Rotameters & Variable Area Flow Meters

A rotameter is a variable area flow meter that uses a tapered tube and a float to indicate flow rate visually. Fluid flowing upward through the tapered tube lifts the float to a height proportional to flow rate, where the float settles and reads against a scale on the tube. Rotameters require no electrical power, no signal cabling and no calibration drift management — they are robust, low-maintenance flow indicators for water and chemical dosing applications.

A variable area flow meter has a vertically mounted tapered tube — narrower at the bottom, wider at the top — with a free-moving float inside. Fluid flowing upward through the tube exerts upward force on the float; gravity exerts downward force. As flow rate increases, the float rises to where the tube cross-section is wider, the upward fluid force is balanced by gravity, and flow can be read from the scale at the float's resting position.

Rotameters cover flow ranges from low LPM for chemical dosing through to 100+ LPM for process water indication, with very small (mL/min) and very large (>500 LPM) ranges available in specialty units. The flow range of any single rotameter is set by the tube geometry and float weight — a single meter typically covers a 10:1 turndown ratio (e.g., 1–10 LPM, 5–50 LPM, 10–100 LPM).

A rotameter is a mechanical flow indicator with no electrical components — flow is read visually by float position. An electronic flow meter (paddle, magnetic, ultrasonic) generates a signal output for connection to PLCs, displays or data loggers. Rotameters are simpler, lower-cost and more robust for visual flow indication. Electronic meters are required where flow data must be logged, alarmed or used in automated control.

Standard rotameters must be installed vertically with flow upward. The float-balance principle relies on gravity acting on the float against upward fluid drag, so horizontal or downward-flow installation produces no readable indication. Inline orientation must be vertical; some specialty rotameters are designed for downward flow with reverse float balance, but these are not the standard product.
