White kitchen with an open sink cupboard and an under sink water filter below the bench

What is an under sink water filter?

An under sink water filter is a filter system that lives in the cupboard below your kitchen sink. Water runs through its cartridges on the way to your tap, so filtered water is ready whenever you pour, with nothing on the bench.

Our MDC under sink filters have stages such as sediment, carbon and ultrafiltration. In general, carbon filtration reduces the chlorine taste and smell of town water, and better-tasting water is what our owners mention most.

None of our MDC under sink filters comes with a tap. You pour from a filtered water tap or a 3 way mixer tap. Several owners chose one with their system, some to match their kitchen. The AQUALA P500, a reverse osmosis system, comes with its own tap.

An under sink filter serves the one tap you drink and cook from. A whole house water filter treats the water where it enters your home, so every tap gets it.

How many stages does an under sink water filter need?

There is no set number. Each stage does one job, and every cartridge is one more to change. Press a type to see what is inside and what it costs to run.

Triple, 3 stage

Every triple has ultrafiltration and carbon. Two also have a sediment stage, and one has an alkaline stage.

Under sink water filter questions

Will an under sink water filter fit my cupboard?

Measure the space under your sink first, then check the size on each product page. The smallest of ours are the 2 in 1 Single and the Single 3 in 1 Compact UF, at 33 cm high, 10 cm wide and 10 cm deep. Each of our under sink filters can sit vertically or horizontally.

How often do the cartridges need changing?

It depends on the system. The intervals on our product pages run from typically 6 to 10 months on the 2 in 1 Single to about 12 to 24 months on the two high flow systems, depending on use and water quality. The stage guide above shows the interval for each system: press its type.

What does an under sink water filter cost to run each year?

About $34.50 to $292.50 a year across the systems on this page with a replacement set, from the 3 in 1 Single Under Sink Hi Flow Water Filter at the low end to the AQUALA P500 Tankless Reverse Osmosis System at the top. Worked out from today’s cartridge prices and each system’s change interval. Actual cost depends on use and water quality.

Which of your under sink filters are high flow?

Two of ours: the Twin High Flow Undersink Water Filtration System and the 3 in 1 Single Under Sink Hi Flow Water Filter. Each is rated up to 5 L/min, at an operating pressure of 200 to 400 kPa.

Where do I buy replacement cartridges?

In our Replacement Filters collection. Each replacement set is linked from its system in the stage guide above. If you cannot find the one for your system, contact the MDC Water team.

Should I choose a filter or reverse osmosis?

Compare what each asks of your kitchen. Our MDC filters run from single systems up to 4 stages and need a tap chosen separately; the yearly cost for each system with a replacement set is in the stage guide above. The AQUALA P500 adds a reverse osmosis membrane and has 7 stages on 3 cartridges. It is tankless, comes with its own tap, shows a live TDS (total dissolved solids) reading on the unit and needs a power point, and its cartridges cost about $292.50 a year.
