Hard Water & Water Softeners

Hard water (calcium & magnesium) is a common problem for many homeowners and businesses. When hardness minerals are combined with heat it forms troublesome scale. Scale causes costly build-up in your plumbing, water heater and other water using appliances. Hard water can clog pipes, damage boilers, heat exchangers, and many other devices.

Hard water can be treated with a water softener to reduce the negative impacts of hard water, it treats the water by removing hardness using ion exchange resin. It exchanges the hardness ions (calcium & magnesium) for sodium ions.

Softening Resin

It is a strong cation exchange resin supplied in its sodium form, it is normally used to soften hard water. Water hardness is usually calculated as Ca2+ and Mg2+.

Water Softener Resin exchanges the hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) dissolved in water for sodium. This soft mineral is contained on the softener resin beads and does not build up on surfaces as scale deposits.

The softener resin is regenerated with a brine solution (salt).
