Commercial Reverse Osmosis Systems

A commercial reverse osmosis system uses a high-pressure pump to force feed water through a semi-permeable membrane, rejecting 95–99% of dissolved salts to a concentrate stream. The permeate (treated water) passes the membrane; the concentrate (reject) carries the rejected salts to drain. Pre-treatment removes particulate and chlorine that would foul or oxidise the membrane. Recovery — the ratio of permeate to feed — is set by feed chemistry and pre-treatment.

Commercial RO systems typically run 500–10,000 LPH at intermittent or single-shift duty; industrial RO systems run 10,000+ LPH on continuous duty with redundant components. Industrial builds add features like duty / standby pumps, multi-train layouts, automated CIP cycles, and full instrumentation. Commercial systems are simpler and lower-capex. The line between the two is application-driven, not just capacity.

Commercial RO systems handle feed water from low-TDS town water through brackish (500–10,000 ppm) and seawater (up to 35,000+ ppm) sources, with the membrane class matched to feed salinity. Brackish membranes are the default for most Australian commercial sites on town or bore feed. Seawater membranes are specified for desalination of coastal or saline feeds. Pre-treatment chemistry has to be matched to the feed before membrane class is locked.

Commercial RO membrane life typically runs three to seven years, set by feed-water quality, pre-treatment, and clean-in-place frequency. Membranes on well-pre-treated brackish feed with regular CIP can last beyond five years. Membranes on harsher feed or with weak pre-treatment may need replacement at two to three years. MDC Water stocks replacement membranes for fast turnover when service interval comes due.

MDC Water supplies both standalone RO membranes and complete commercial RO plant builds. Membrane-only orders ship from Australian stock for in-house replacement programs. Complete plant builds are scoped to feed-water analysis, target flow and treated-water specification, and delivered as ready-to-install assemblies. Buyers can also order partial sub-assemblies — pump skids, vessel sets, dosing rigs — without committing to a full turnkey plant.
