Two levers on one body: the main lever runs hot and cold at full mains pressure (7.5 L/min), and a second, smaller lever pours filtered water through its own sealed channel and its own outlet. The pull-out head does the real work
The spray head pulls out on a flexible hose for rinsing vegetables, filling stockpots on the bench, and washing down the sink itself. What is a 3 way kitchen mixer tap and how does it work?
A 3-way kitchen mixer tap (also called a three way tap or tri-flow tap) is a special kitchen faucet that delivers hot, cold, and filtered water all from a single tap. It combines your ordinary hot/cold mixer with a drinking water filter tap in one sleek unit.
Providing you with pure filtered water on demand alongside regular tap water, without needing a second faucet on your sink. The one tap does it all – giving you hot, cold, and great-tasting filtered water in a convenient, space-saving design.
Can I install a 3 way mixer tap myself, or do I need a plumber for installation?
Installing a 3-way mixer tap is very similar to installing any standard kitchen mixer tap – it fits into the same single hole and comes with flexible hoses for connection.
In terms of basic steps, it involves: removing the old tap, inserting the new tap assembly, and connecting the hot, cold, and filter lines. Technically, a confident DIYer could handle the physical installation, since the tap uses standard 1/2″ BSP plumbing connections for hot and cold and a 1/4″ tube for the filter line (which are standard sizes in Australia). For safety and compliance (and to ensure your warranty remains valid), it’s recommended to have a licensed plumber install the 3-way tap. A professional will ensure all connections are secure and meet local plumbing standards. Using a plumber guarantees the installation is done correctly and legally – in fact, many manufacturers advise professional installation to comply with regulations.
So while it’s physically possible to do it yourself, your best bet is to use a qualified plumber for this job.
How does a three-way mixer tap work?
Our Three-way mixer taps use separate internal waterways and controls for each water source. Typically, the taps have dual handles: one lever mixes hot and cold water as usual, while a second smaller lever dispenses filtered water.
Inside the faucet, there are independent channels so the purified water never mixes with the mains water, keeping your drinking water pure. When you turn the filtered water handle, water from your under-sink filter flows through its own outlet in the spout. The hot/cold lever operates the regular tap water. Both streams exit through the same faucet spout but are completely isolated internally, ensuring the filtered water remains fresh and uncontaminated. Despite the extra functionality, a 3-way mixer tap installs much like a standard kitchen mixer and uses the incoming water pressure – no electrical pump is needed.

What kind of water filter can I connect to a 3-way tap?
You can connect virtually any under-sink water filter system to our 3-way mixer taps, as long as it has a dedicated tubing outlet for dispensing the filtered water. These taps are very versatile and compatible with most common filtration setups.
Overall, as long as your filter system outputs to a tube that can connect to the tap (most use 1/4″ which is the industry standard), you’re good to go. Our 3-way taps, for example, can be fitted to any under-sink filter system using the default 1/4″ tubing, and we offer adapters for 3/8″ or other sizes to suit brands like Brita, if needed. Will a 3-way mixer tap fit my kitchen sink?
